The death of “Saint Romero of America”

Saint Romero was murdered by a far-right death squad in the chapel of the small hospital Divine Providence, in San Salvador. Known as ‘the voice of the voiceless’, Romero spoke out in his homilies against human rights violations in the years prior to the civil war, thereby becoming a reference in the defense of the most vulnerable sectors.

The report of the United Nations Truth Commission of 1993, he pointed out that the person responsible for giving the order to assassinate Romero was Major Roberto D’Aubuisson, founder of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), a party for which he was a deputy and presidential candidate. This document also indicates that, in the planning and execution of the murder, captains Álvaro Saravia and Eduardo Ávila, as well as Fernando Sagrera and Mario Molina, among others, participated.

The annulment of a 1993 amnesty law by a ruling by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court in 2016 allowed the reopening of this case and the processes, although with slow progress and no resolutions yet.

Romero was canonized in Rome on October 14, 2018 before thousands of people, after Pope Francis signed a decree months earlier that recognizes the miracle attributed to the religious.
