We get angry when invisible mechanisms, with various content control groups on digital networks or with influence on the “cutters” of algorithms on platforms, freeze, download and completely delete posts with news, facts, judgments and opinions that do not suit the various systems of power. These censorship actions, however, will be “innocent” if the government’s plan to create a new digital platform which, with the help of artificial intelligence, will control content on the internet with a mandate to identify false – against the government – news and download it.
The news of the use of AI programs to control online content on a platform prepared by the Ministries of Digital Governance and Foreign Affairs was given by government officials in a report of the English-language page ekathimerini.com. In fact, these programs are able to check not only keywords, but entire meanings. Only Reuters Institute director Rasmus Klein Nielsen has responded to this goal so far, writing publicly on X (formerly Twitter) that “artificial intelligence cannot reliably identify fake news” and governments cannot be arbiters of truth, since they use policies of deception.
In a corresponding report in the newspaper Daily specific examples of censorship intervention were also mentioned, such as “international disinformation campaigns” to create impressions with attacks on tourism, security, democracy in the country! It is noted that if the platform had already existed, the discussion and decision in the European Parliament’s committee on crime in Tempe would have been labeled “false” and included in the context of disinformation, while the government would have demanded that it be removed from the internet.
The way of intervention is dealt with by another government legislation which is in the competent committee of the Parliament. It is about the implementation of the European Directive on “DSA digital services”. This defines the control bodies – EETT, ESR, ELAS and a new body of “digital advisors” in the ministry – that will receive complaints about misinformation and the circulation of false news and will require the platforms to take them down.
