Yevgeny Prigozhinthe former leader of the mercenary group Wagner, has barely been buried in St. Petersburg, and conspiracy theories have already begun to emerge that he is actually alive and in an “undisclosed country”.

What made the conspiracyists believe in this hypothesis, according to the British tabloid The Sun, was a peculiar gift left in Prigozhin’s sumptuous tomb. Among the rows of flowers and tributes on her tombstone, a framed poem was left there, apparently filled with mysterious hints.

According to Kremlin media outlet Moskovskij Komsomolets, which has authorization to perform, the poem reads: “As I take the first step on the threshold, not understanding, not deciding. Are you my son or God? That is, dead or alive?”.

The words are an excerpt from a poem composed by former Soviet Union writer Joseph Brodsky entitled Dead nature.

While many have suggested it’s just a heartfelt tribute, others believe it’s more of an indication that Prigozhin hasn’t passed away.

Those who believe that the former head of the Wagner group is alive say that Brodsky’s work was an interesting choice, given that the author frequently clashed with Soviet leaders.

This comes after a video has resurfaced in which Prigozhin would have predicted his death in a dramatic way. The former mercenary leader compared Russia under Vladimir Putin to an aircraft “on the verge of disaster” that could “fall apart from the sky”.

Russian expert Valery Solovey boldly declared Tuesday that the funeral may have been a hoax – claiming that “Prigozhin was not on board” the doomed jet. “Your double was flying in your place — Vladimir Putin is perfectly aware of that,” teased Solovey.

“If you trust the official statements of the Russian administration, what else can I add?”

Russian investigation

Although the Kremlin did not launch an international investigation into the crash, a spokesman said the Russian investigation had considered the possibility that the crash was deliberately caused.

“It is obvious that different versions are being considered, including the version – you know what we are talking about -, say, a deliberate atrocity,” said Moscow spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

A preliminary US intelligence assessment of the explosion concluded that an intentional explosion caused the plane to crash. One of the officials, who could not be named, said the blast was in line with Putin’s “long history of trying to silence his critics”.

Sources on Telegram said a shipment of “expensive wine” was placed aboard the aircraft minutes before takeoff. Another claim on social media was that explosives were hidden in the drink packaging.

Prigozhin’s flight attendant, Kristina Raspopova, 39, had revealed hours earlier to her relatives a mysterious flight delay and mysterious repairs that had been made to the jet.

The exiled Wagner boss’s private jet caught fire just 50 km from Putin’s sumptuous palace in Valdai, in northern Russia.

The president sent his condolences to Prigozhin’s family, but stressed that he made “serious mistakes” and had a “difficult fate”.
