National Union Council questions the Government’s constituent proposal that is not made up of the country’s traditional leaders, but rather of diverse citizens, with the aim that they once again make fundamental decisions for the country.

During the meeting, part of his tour of 10 municipalities in the southern Colombian Caribbean within the framework of the Government with the People, Petro emphasized the need for active participation of the population in the configuration of constitutional decisions. He pointed out that the constituent proposal that he promotes does not have the intention of replacing the Constitution of ’91, but rather of updating it in light of the changes that have occurred since its promulgation.

The president recognized that the Constitution of ’91 was prepared by the Colombian people, but he also highlighted that, over the years, not all the decisions that emanated from it have been implemented. He referred to powerful interests that seek to undermine the popular mandate and subvert the social rule of law that inspired Magna Carta.

Petro emphasized that his government is committed to fighting the forces that seek to obstruct his administration and contravene the popular will. expressed in the 2022 elections. Likewise, he emphasized that his proposal seeks to empower the population and allow the people themselves to decide about their destiny and the direction of the country.

In this sense, he highlighted the importance of regional popular assemblies, such as the one held in Ayapel and other cities, as spaces where the voice of the people can be heard and taken into account by the government. He warned that if his government begins to address the demands arising from these assemblies, the path would be opening towards a true Constituent Assembly.
