Experts expect a noticeable increase in health insurance contributions in the coming year. We show how much less you would have to net as a result.
Health insurance contributions in Germany could rise significantly in 2025. According to a calculation by the so-called estimator group, the additional contribution required by statutory health insurance companies should be 2.5 percent next year. That would be 0.8 percent more than in 2024 and would result in employees’ net salaries falling accordingly.
The following table shows how your net income will change if the contribution burden rises to a total of 17.1 percent in 2025:
For an average earner who, according to preliminary calculations, will receive 3,780 euros gross per month in 2024, this would mean an annual loss of 181.44 euros.
However, it is not yet clear whether this will actually happen. Because the estimated value for the coming year is only a theoretical value. Each health insurance company decides for itself how much the contribution rate actually increases – and always only at the turn of the year. However, almost all employees in Germany would be affected by an increase. The only exceptions are self-employed people and civil servants who do not have statutory health insurance.
Good to know: You only pay social security contributions up to a certain level of your income. This is called the contribution assessment limit. In health insurance, this will be 5,175 euros per month in 2024.
If you earn more than 5,775 euros per month, you have reached the compulsory insurance limit and can choose whether you want to continue to be insured by law or prefer private insurance. Read here when private health insurance is the better choice.
