Matteo Bassetti, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Martino Polyclinic in Genoa, comments on a research published in ‘Jama Internal Medicine’ via social media.
Conducted on high-risk patients with mild to moderate Covid-19, in 20 public hospitals and a quarantine center in Malaysia between May 31 and October 25, 2021, the open-label randomized clinical trial involved 490 participants over 50 enrolled within the first week after the onset of symptoms of Sars-CoV-2 infection. One group received ivermectin as an adjunct to standard treatment (symptomatic therapy and monitoring for signs of early deterioration), the other only standard care.
The authors’ conclusion is succinct: “Treatment with ivermectin during the early stages of the disease did not prevent progression to severe disease. The results of the study do not support the use of ivermectin for patients with Covid-19.”
