Cowboys End Season in Disarray, Extending Super Bowl Drought to 30 Years

The Dallas Cowboys have suffered consecutive losing seasons for the first time as 2002, culminating in a decisive 34-17 defeat against the New york Giants on Sunday. The game was marked by important setbacks, including the benching of quarterback Dak prescott and an ejection stemming from on-field misconduct.

A sense of frustration permeated the Cowboys’ performance, as Prescott was removed from the game at halftime after a lackluster first half where he fumbled and managed only 70 passing yards. Despite leading the league in passing yards for the season at the time of his removal, Prescott’s season ended on a sour note.

Did you know? – The Cowboys haven’t appeared in a Super Bowl since winning Super Bowl XXVII in January 1993,defeating the Buffalo Bills 52-17. That’s a 31-year span as of February 2024.

In Prescott’s absence, the Cowboys were outscored 18-7 in the second half, and the team found itself embroiled in a heated altercation with Giants players. Defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku was ejected from the game after removing a Giants player’s helmet during a stoppage in play in the third quarter. The incident sparked a brawl involving pushing, shoving, and intentional face-mask grabbing.

Adding to the Cowboys’ woes, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was penalized for unnecessary roughness, positioning the giants favorably for a two-point conversion attempt, which they successfully executed to extend their lead to 24-10. Backup quarterback Joe Milton later threw an interception, sealing the Cowboys’ fate in a 17-point loss.

This defeat officially extends the Cowboys’ Super Bowl drought to 30 years, a disheartening outcome for a team that made a significant investment at the trade deadline. Dallas traded a 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick to the New York Jets for Williams in a bid to bolster their playoff chances, a move that ultimately failed to yield immediate results. Williams remains under contract through 2027.

Pro tip – Trading for players mid-season can be risky. Teams must quickly integrate new talent while potentially disrupting existing chemistry. Evaluating long-term fit is crucial.

The Cowboys’ struggles were further compounded by the preseason trade of star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Without Parsons, the Cowboys’ defense has fallen to 29th in the NFL in defensive rankings.

Despite a brief resurgence in November – a three-game winning streak that improved their record to 6-5-1 and put them within reach of the NFC’s seventh seed – a 44-30 loss to the Detroit Lions on December 4th effectively extinguished their playoff hopes, dropping their chances to just 8%. They finished the season with a 1-3 record in their final four games.

Simultaneously occurring, the New York Giants improved to 4-13, enduring their third consecutive losing season. The Giants, who had the chance to secure a high draft pick with a loss, potentially dropped to the seventh overall selection with their victory. Notably, the Giants defeated both the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles in the same season for the first time as 2020.

Reader question – do you think the Cowboys’ front office will make significant changes in the offseason, or will they stick with the current coaching staff and core players?
