Tirunelveli: Doctors said it is time to create awareness about cancer vaccines.

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, doctors Induja, Saradha and VJ of the Nellie Cancer Co-Centre (Helping Hearts) in Tirunelveli told reporters on Sunday:

World Cancer Day is observed on 4th February every year. The number of cancer patients in India has increased dramatically. According to the latest 2022 census, there will be 1.4 lakh new cancer patients in India and 9.1 lakh patients will reach the critical stage of death.

As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, men are more prone to stomach, lung and cancer, while women are more prone to breast, cervical and vulva cancers. 2 lakh 30 thousand 834 people have been made aware of cancer through 2922 awareness programs in Tirunelveli district since 2011 on behalf of our centre. 61,100 people have been screened for cancer through 2974 camps.

There are many misconceptions about cancer. Cancer is not an epidemic. Early detection increases the chance of cure. About 10 percent of cancers are hereditary, smoking accounts for about 40 to 50 percent of lung cancer, and most cancers are caused by modern lifestyles and chemical-induced diets.

A vaccine has been found to prevent cervical cancer. Women between the ages of 9 and 26 can prevent cancer by getting this vaccine. It is the imperative of time to create awareness about cancer vaccines. Home-based cancer palliative care services are being provided to prevent the neglect of cancer patients.

Accordingly, medical assistance, psychological counseling, pain management and nutritional assistance are provided to cancer patients and their dependents.
