The price of sugar reached alarming levels in Santiago de Cuba, where a pound of this basic product is selling for up to 600 Cuban pesos in the informal market, aggravating the already critical economic situation that the island is going through.
A woman from Santiago de Cuba, Gema Jlo, expressed her astonishment and frustration on social media in the Facebook group “Bazar Santiago de Cuba” by sharing that a pound of sugar had reached 550 CUP in her town, which reflects the rise in prices. food in the country.

“It is incredible that a pound of sugar costs 550 pesos,” he wrote, emphasizing that “it is already a luxury to have a spoonful of sugar” in your home.
Inflation in Cuba is affecting essential products, and sugar, a key food in the Cuban diet, is no exception. In the midst of the crisis, families face enormous difficulties in acquiring basic necessities, since their income does not adjust to the increase in prices.
With only 15 sugar mills in operation for the next harvest, the shortage of the product is evident, and many Cubans have opted for extreme measures to sweeten their food, such as the use of instant soft drinks, a harmful practice that, according to the Food Monitoring Program, , is already causing serious consequences on the health of the population.
For her part, Cuban activist Yamilka Laffita, known as Lara Crofs on social networks, denounced the high costs of agricultural products in Santiago.

In a post on his Facebook profile, he ironically mentioned the exorbitant prices he paid for vegetables: “Mrs Onion, 650 CUP per pound; the honorable Don Limón, 500 CUP per pound; and the nutritious Mr. Tomato, 750 CUP per pound.”
Cubans continue to fight to survive in the midst of the crisis, while the communist regime only continues to lie to the people.
