The homologation period for vehicles assembled by parts and pieces, initially scheduled to end on December 31, will be extended for longer to be able to complete the process with all those involved, official sources on the island reported.

According to the Ministry of Transportation (Mitrans), the procedure will be in force until “the legalization and delivery of the license plate, as appropriate, of all vehicles processed by the provinces.”

“For cases that were not registered or properly processed for different reasons, an evaluation is currently being carried out, the results of which will be reported in a timely manner,” Mitrans indicated in a statement.

The approval process for these vehicles came into force with Resolution 200 of 2021 of the Minister of Transportation, to extraordinary legalize motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, assembled by parts and pieces, or registered, but with transformations.

As explained that year by Mitrans, it is a process that will be carried out only once and exceptionally, taking into account the state of many vehicles that circulate on the streets of the island with adaptations and unregistered spare parts.

To carry out the legalization, the owners or their representative must present several documents, including purchase invoices for the parts and pieces, or demonstrate the legal origin of the components used through an affidavit.

You must also present your personal identification document and three printed photos of the vehicle, showing its front, rear and side views.

With all of the above, files are presented to the Homologation Commissions, including a technical opinion and a document that supports the automotive technical review by the authorities. Vehicles that do not pass the technical inspection can be presented again after 180 days, explains the Official Gazette of the Republic.

On the island, this type of vehicle is common due not only to the inventiveness of Cubans, but also due to the lack of spare parts and original parts for cars and motorcycles, since many of those in circulation were built even before 1959. .

The measure was presented by the National Road Safety Commission as a way to reinforce road safety and reduce accidents caused by motor vehicles not suitable for circulation due to their technical condition and because they are assembled by hand.
