The Associated Press reported that a hot topic broke out at a shopping center in Dallas, Texas, around 9 o’clock on the 3rd (local time), and although there were no casualties, about 500 animals in the shopping center’s pet store died en masse.

Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said 579 pet store animals died from smoke inhalation in a fire at the Plaza Latina shopping center in northwest Dallas.

The flames from the fire did not spread to the animals, but they died from smoke, etc. Most of the animals affected were small birds, and a chicken, a hamster, and two each of a dog and a cat also died, Evans said.

CBS reported that about 20 of the animals in the store were rescued, and firefighters saved dogs and turtles using CPR.

The fire was extinguished around 11 a.m., about two hours later, with 45 firefighters deployed.

The single-story shopping center suffered significant structural damage from the fire and the roof partially collapsed, Evans said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation.
