Luke Littler was already celebrated at the last Darts World Championship. He made his debut this year on Saturday – and was emotionally moved afterwards.
With a confident sporting performance, Luke Littler impressively demonstrated his ambitions at the Darts World Championship in London. The 17-year-old Englishman clearly defeated Ryan Meikle 3-1 and thus underlined his role as one of the top favorites for the title.
Also because he delivered the best set ever played at a World Cup. In the fourth set, Littler averaged 140.91 points – replacing the previous record holder Gerwyn Price. However, it became clear after the match that the tension at such a big tournament does not leave Littler unscathed.
Littler gave an interview to the English broadcaster Sky and began by talking about the first sentence, which he narrowly won: “It’s probably the first and biggest time that the pressure has hit me. In the Premier League, on the first Evening against Luke Humphries, I was nervous, but the whole year – all the European tours and all the majors I played – I’ve been fine.”
As he spoke the words, Littler fought back tears and admitted the pressure was “very intense.” Suddenly Littler turned away and cried. He put his hands over his face to hide his emotions and then ran to his parents.
He then explained his reaction at a press conference. Littler spoke of having put in a “tremendous performance this year” and added of his post-match moment that it was “a bit too much” to “speak on stage afterwards”.
