A man has been charged with first-degree murder following a shooting last week that left one national Guardsman dead and another seriously injured near the White House. The incident has prompted a swift inquiry into the suspect’s background and potential motives.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, a national of Afghanistan, made a virtual appearance in D.C. Superior Court on Tuesday to face charges related to the shooting. He pleaded not guilty to all counts, including first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill while armed, and multiple firearms offenses. A judge ordered him held without bond.
Details of the Attack
According to officials, Lakanwal allegedly shot Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, while they were on patrol as part of their deployment to the nation’s capital. The shooting occurred last Wednesday, and both guardsmen, serving with the West Virginia national Guard, sustained gunshot wounds to the head. Beckstrom tragically succumbed to her injuries, a fact confirmed by President Donald Trump during a Thanksgiving Day call to troops.
Wolfe remains hospitalized in serious condition, but West Virginia gov.Patrick Morrisey reported on Monday that Wolfe had shown encouraging signs of improvement, communicating with nurses through a “thumbs-up” and toe wiggles.
Court documents reveal that Lakanwal reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar!” (“God is great” in Arabic) during the attack and was subdued while attempting to reload his weapon.
Suspect’s Background and Prior Service
Authorities have yet to establish a definitive motive for the shooting. However, investigations have uncovered details about Lakanwal’s past. A relative stated that lakanwal arrived in the United states in September 2021, having previously served for 10 years in the Afghan army alongside U.S. Special Forces troops. He was residing in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children at the time of the incident.
The CIA has confirmed that Lakanwal was employed by the U.S. government as part of a partner force in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His service concluded in 2021 with the withdrawal of U.S.troops from the country.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities continue to gather information to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
