Stranger Things Season 5 Reveals Surprising Connection to Joyce Byers’ Past
Meta Description: Discover how Stranger Things season 5 cleverly incorporates a young Joyce byers, portrayed by actress Birdy, and hints at connections to the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The latest season of Stranger Things is proving that masterful visual effects aren’t the only ingredient for compelling storytelling – on-camera ingenuity still plays a vital role. As the sci-fi epic unfolds its fifth and final season, viewers are uncovering hidden layers within the narrative, including a surprising glimpse into the past of one of Hawkins’ most beloved residents.
In a pivotal scene, Max (Sadie Sink) navigates the memories of the series’ antagonist, Vecna, specifically those relating to his childhood as Henry Creel. During her exploration of Hawkins High in 1959, Max encounters a familiar face: a young Joyce Byers, brought to life by actress Birdy. The casting choice has sparked considerable buzz online, with many viewers commenting on the uncanny resemblance between Birdy and Winona Ryder. Another simply stated, “Bruhhh you two are identical I literally thought it was AI.” The resemblance is notably notable, mirroring Ryder’s appearance during her breakout roles in films like Beetlejuice, Heathers, and Edward Scissorhands.
The scene, from episode four, “Sorcerer,” centers around Joyce promoting the school’s upcoming production of Oklahoma!. The flyer itself is a treasure trove of Easter eggs, listing a young Jim Hopper, Mike’s parents Karen and Ted Wheeler, Eddie Munson’s father Alan Munson, Bob Newby’s sister Patty Newby, and even Henry Creel himself.
The events surrounding Joyce’s theater group are further explored in the spinoff stage play, Stranger Things: The First shadow. However, the Duffer Brothers have emphasized that the play and the television series will remain distinct entities. “We’re very careful with the play,” one of the Duffer Brothers explained to entertainment Weekly. “Knowing how few people in the scheme of things are gonna be able to see that, to make sure that season 5 functions entirely on its own.”
Despite this separation, the brothers acknowledged the presence of “Easter eggs” connecting the two narratives, promising a richer experience for those who have seen the play, particularly as the season progresses to Volume 2.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Joyce calls out to a student named “Harrington” in the hallway, possibly foreshadowing an appearance by Steve Harrington’s father – perhaps as the “original jerk jock” hinted at in the source material.
The Duffer Brothers have teased a purposeful overlap between season 5 and The First Shadow, revealing that they even had to limit the amount of material the play’s producers could include to avoid spoilers. “A lot of the stuff that’s covered in the Broadway show is covered in the final season as well,” one brother stated. “Actually, we had to block the Broadway show producers a lot from putting in too much material that we were gonna have in season 5 because we did not want it to be too spoilery.”
Episodes 5-7 of Stranger Things season 5 are scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day on Netflix.
