The sociologist: «The nominations in the museums? Too many runners and few competent people “

Originally from Rotello, in Molise, Roman by adoption, the sociologist Domenico De Masi is very close to Campania. He is an honorary citizen of Sant’Agata dei Goti and Ravello. And it is precisely in the village suspended between sea and sky of the Amalfi Coast that he led, on two occasions, the foundation that manages the historic music festival, from 2000 to 2010, and, for only 3 months, in 2015.
Professor, first of all a question not taken for granted. How are you?
«Well now, I have been negative for three days. Although I had received the two doses of the vaccine, I was within the 5 percent margin of ineffectiveness. Fortunately, thanks to the monoclonal antibodies I had no consequences ».
In Campania there is a rush for the integrative appointments of the Region in the scientific committees of important museum institutions. Some of the new entrants, while worthy people, do not have specific skills. Do you think it possible?
«In Ravello I was one of the founders of the Foundation. The statute was made as God commands. It was based on the clear distinction between the board of directors, which was in charge of the economic part, and the board of directors for the artistic part. After all, in every company there is a head of the commercial and financial sector and another for the products. In the case of the Festival, the product is artistic-scientific. I had therefore divided the two councils and had been very careful in forming the steering council. When, at the beginning of the De Luca era, I was called back to be president, I found a beautiful and ready-made council, made up of people who, apart from an actor and a conservatory director, had little or nothing to do with art: a former mayor, a former councilor of the Amalfi Coast and so on. And they claimed to determine the artistic choices. Campania pays no attention to competence, this is the tragedy ».
To what extent can the political management of regional appointments be independent of competences?
«Political management must always remain within the sphere of competences. If you need a doctor, you can’t choose a lawyer or an architect. And then the grillini blame themselves for saying that one is worth one. But it didn’t just happen in Ravello: too many gallop riders were chosen that De Luca liked ».
Yesterday in an interview with our newspaper, the philosopher Biagio de Giovanni argued that never as today, in a broken society, in which the hierarchy of skills has been lost and fake news are rampant, there is an urgent need to make appropriate choices to tasks. Do you subscribe?
“Of course, but I have to admit that even our academic world hasn’t always provided good examples. How many competitions won by children of ».
In Campania there is no councilor for Culture. Can governor De Luca do without it for the rest of the legislature?
«When I returned to lead the Foundation, Sebastiano Maffettone was in charge of Culture in the role of advisor to the president. He certainly had the necessary skills, but perhaps he lacked the motivation. It is certainly strange that in a region that assumes itself cultured, with so many universities and at least 10 thousand professors, there is not one capable of being the councilor for culture ».
De Luca himself has always accused the M5S of having made choices without taking into account merits and skills. Does it contradict itself now?
«My experience is this: Bassolino never put his mouth on artistic choices, I had 12 directors chosen by me, some were certainly not pro-Bassolinians. With De Luca only prevarications. Campania is in the center of the Mediterranean, center of gravity between East and West, between North and South, has a very happy climate, is full of works of art and extraordinary landscape beauties. Well, its per capita GDP is one third of that of Lombardy. Who is conspiring against Campania? The absence of attention to competence. And the opposite of competence is familism ».
At the Madre museum, 4 authoritative members of the scientific committee (Patrizia Sandretto, Olga Sviblova, Manal Ataya and Doris Salcedo) resigned after the appointment of the new president Angela Tecce. But they are considered still in office on the official website of the Museum. A lack of the Donnaregina Foundation?
«Having been nominated by the outgoing president Laura Valente it is right that they have left. As soon as Bassolino, who had appointed me, fell, I resigned from the presidency of the Cilento Park. I appreciate these ladies. But if they have resigned, they don’t have to accept a re-assignment. And they have to rewrite demanding deletion from the site ».
