The surfing world is in mourning. Mikala Jones, a 44-year-old Hawaiian surfer, died on Sunday July 9 following a tragic accident. Originally from the North Shore of Oahu, the temple of Hawaiian surfing because of the waves and its professional competitions, Mikala Jones lost his life during a sliding session in the Mentawii Islands.
This father of three children died after being locked in a big wave, reports the site Duke Surf. In his fall, he would have “severed the femoral artery in the groin” before “suffering massive blood loss”. He died as several people pulled him out of the water.
“Jones put his GoPro in his mouth and started paddling with great energy to surf the second wave of a giant series. She was very big, three times her size… When he came out of the foam, a few seconds later, he realized that he had cut his groin and decided to let go of his leash,” says Uruguayan surfer Santiago Pereira, who accompanied him on the Indonesian waves that day.

Under his last Instagram post, he received many tributes from legends of this sport, including that of Kelly Slater, considered the best surfer of all time, or the famous French surfer, now retired, Miky Picon.
If this type of accident remains extremely rare, it is not the first time that a surfer cuts the femoral artery during a session. In 2018, a 24-year-old German tourist cut her femoral artery with the fins of her board in Gironde.
Last summer, in Finistère, a 50-year-old man also died after cutting himself with the fin of his board in the groin, also severing his femoral artery.
