Meanwhile, the French Ministry of the Interior announced that the number of wounded people had increased to 4,136, of which the condition of 124 was serious.
Mayotte provincial authorities said, “The process of identifying hurricane victims is continuing in collaboration with local officials and associations.”
A field hospital equipped with a maternity ward and two operating rooms was opened early Wednesday morning in a stadium east of Mamoudzou, the capital of the archipelago. The facility is designed to receive 100 people each day for examination.
Mayotte’s most devastating hurricane in 90 years caused massive damage when it hit France’s poorest department on December 14, and relief workers have since struggled to restore basic services such as water, electricity and communications networks.
Government authorities said that 100,000 liters of water are now being distributed daily.
The air bridge established between Mayotte, Reunion Island and mainland France can now be used to transport more than 100 tons of equipment daily.
