New Exhibition in Zonnig Huis Residential Care Center Showcases Artwork by Residents with Dementia

Halle, September 18, 2023 – In honor of Dementia Week, Zonnig Huis residential care center is set to unveil a remarkable exhibition featuring artwork created by residents with dementia. The exhibition, which runs from September 22 to December 10, aims to challenge the public’s perception of individuals with dementia and highlight their creative abilities.

Dementia is a condition that affects a significant number of individuals worldwide. During Dementia Week, the focus is on changing the way society views those living with the illness. Instead of solely seeing them as patients, Zonnig Huis is urging the public to acknowledge them as individuals with rich stories, pasts, and futures.

Titled “Dementia in the Picture with Art,” the exhibition uses artwork as a medium to depict the experiences of those living with dementia. The pieces on display have been created collaboratively by residents of the Nura department, who have embraced art as a means of self-expression.

The results of this collaborative project have been nothing short of impressive. Working alongside the residents, the staff at Zonnig Huis witnessed firsthand the meaningful impact art can have on those with dementia. Through the artwork, the exhibition aims to showcase the beauty that individuals with dementia are capable of creating, debunking any misconceptions about their abilities.

Moreover, the exhibition serves as a powerful signal to the outside world that this often-overlooked population deserves attention and support. By displaying artwork that tells the stories of these individuals, Zonnig Huis hopes to spark a conversation and encourage society not to forget those living with dementia.

The concept for the exhibition centered around using the silhouettes of the residents’ heads, symbolizing the connection between dementia and the brain. The artwork goes beyond capturing the symptoms and characteristics of the condition, delving into the unique identities and talents of each resident. From problems with language and memory to the impact on daily life, every visitor will find meaning and symbolism in the artwork.

The exhibition at Zonnig Huis residential care center, located at August Demaeghtlaan 36, Halle, will be open to the public from September 22, 2023, to December 10, 2023. Visitors can explore the exhibition daily between 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM.

As Dementia Week commences, Zonnig Huis is proud to showcase the creativity and strength of individuals living with dementia. This exhibition not only celebrates the residents’ artwork but also strives to break down barriers and reshape societies’ understanding and perception of dementia.]
