In response to the news of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s death on the 30th, the Democratic Party of Korea said, “We pray for the deceased’s peaceful rest, and we mourn his death together with the people of the Republic of Korea.”

Democratic Party spokesperson Han Min-soo expressed his condolences in a written briefing this morning, saying, “Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away at the age of 100 after a battle with illness.”

A spokesperson said, “Former President Carter was a ‘peace broker’ who was active in international disputes, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002,” adding, “During his time in office, the deceased promoted a ‘détente’ in easing tensions between the United States and China. “He also worked for peace and stability in the Middle East region.”

He continued, “The deceased’s life became even brighter after he left office. “After leaving office, he took the lead in protecting human rights, eradicating poverty, and resolving international conflicts, and was evaluated as ‘the greatest former American president.’ In particular, in 1994, he personally flew to North Korea and laid the foundation for the Geneva Agreement to resolve the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula. “It contributed greatly to solving the problem.”

He added, “People around the world will never forget the deceased, who became a symbol of the Habitat movement for people around the world suffering from hunger and disaster.”

Meanwhile, according to the Washington Post (WP), former President Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia, USA on the 29th (local time).

The Carter Center and the family did not reveal the specific cause of death, but it appears that the cause was a previous battle with cancer.

Former President Carter revealed that he was suffering from cancer in August 2015, when he was 91 years old, and declared that he was completely cured after 5 months, showing off his health. However, in February of last year, he announced that he was suffering from melanoma skin cancer and that he would spend the rest of his life receiving hospice care.
