Berlin In 2022, Denmark became the country with the best location conditions for companies in the world for the first time. This is the result of a study by the private business school IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, which produces a large-scale comparative study on international competitiveness every year. The current, as yet unpublished version is available to the Handelsblatt. IMD has been publishing the evaluation for 34 years.

“Denmark is the most digitally advanced country in the world and now takes the top spot thanks to good policies, the benefits of being a European country, a clear focus on sustainability and a boost to its agile corporate sector,” said project leader Arturo Bris .

In 2021, Denmark was still in third place. Last year’s leader Switzerland is now second. Singapore is in third place. The USA, which was still at the top of the ranking in 2018, is now only tenth.

The basis for the ranking of 63 countries is formed by 333 indicators. These include factors such as unemployment, government spending on health and education, and gross domestic product (GDP). The results of a survey of managers on topics such as social cohesion, globalization and corruption are also included.

Croatia made the biggest leap compared to the previous year. The Eastern European country moved up from 59th to 46th place. The IMD experts suspect that this has something to do with the forthcoming entry into the euro. Due to the exceptional situation in Russia and Ukraine, the researchers did not include the two countries in the study this time.

State activity in Germany backwards

Germany again occupies 15th place in a location comparison. The Federal Republic has been in this area of the ranking for years. In particular, the economic strength secures the placement. Here the Federal Republic landed in third place. In other areas, such as state regulation, Germany fares significantly worse and only ranks 21st.

Germany’s mediocre development in terms of location attractiveness is also confirmed by other evaluations, such as the location index of the German Economic Institute (IW).

Chart

The employer-oriented economics institute examined the industrial location quality of 45 countries on the basis of 61 indicators. Most of the indicators refer to the year 2019 because there is no more recent data available in many areas. Only industrialized countries are at the top of the ranking. Malaysia ranks 15th as the best emerging market, China comes in at 22nd place.

Germany has dropped from third place in 2013 to fourth place. Now it is still behind the winning country Switzerland, the USA and the Netherlands. However, the study says: The overall positive place should not hide the fact that “the previous weaknesses of Germany as a location became even more pronounced.”
