Asked by RMC Ahead of his return to competition next March, Paul Pogba has revealed he spoke briefly to the France manager.
«There’s this light that comes on again. A few days ago on the FFF website, Didier Deschamps welcomed the reduction of the suspension for doping (from four years to eighteen months) of Paul Pogba, who will be able to return to playing football starting from March 2025. Even if he still has still a long way to go to regain the levels of the past, the French midfielder wants to come back stronger than ever, to finally find the Azzurri of a coach with whom he has always maintained a special relationship.
“Of course it’s a goal. As I have always said, it has always been a dream for me to play for the French national team. It’s been years since I left (its last selection dates back to March 2022). And you have to be ready for that too, confided the 2018 world champion RMCin the show Generation later. There are players, very, very good players who are in this position. I have to deserve this place again. And I’ll do my best to come back, of course. If it can help the team and if it’s an advantage, why not? You have to earn this place, of course.
The relationship with Deschamps, “an advantage” for Pogba
The “Pioche”, who hopes to get back into the rhythm of the competition with the colors of Juventus, explained that he has not yet discussed a possible return to the blue with Deschamps. But the coach of the French team never really forgot him, not even during the months of suspension away from the pitch.
“Of course, it’s always nice to see that your coach also supports you off the pitch when you have problems, declared the man with 91 appearances in the Italian jersey. He did it and not just for doping, but for many other non-sporting problems. And I also like to ask the coach for advice, so we have this relationship where I can text him during the holidays, where I can call him and ask him for advice. It’s always nice to have that relationship. (…) Of course it was an advantage for me.”
And Paul Pogba revealed the message sent by Didier Deschamps, once the player’s suspension was lifted: “He said to me, ‘Paul, you have to work, you have to work. When I tell you to work it means you have to double your efforts.’ And I told him yes, I know. And there you have it, you had that chance. So it’s work, work, work. And he’s absolutely right. That’s what I like, this frankness. We have this relationship where he can be frank and say ‘Boy, it’s all good, Paul Pogba, it’s all good, you’re coming back, they’ve reduced (your suspension), but you’ve got to work, boy. “
