Next Wednesday, Mainz and FC Bayern will meet in the DFB Cup. However, one national player will be missing and is injured.
Bad news for Mainz 05: The Bundesliga club will have to do without national player Jonathan Burkardt for the time being. As the Mainz team announced on Saturday afternoon, the striker has suffered a muscle injury in his thigh and will be out for the time being.
On Friday evening it was said that Burkardt would be out for “a week or two,” said coach Bo Henriksen after his team’s 1-1 (0-0) draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach: “I don’t think the injury is serious.”
Burkardt, who has six goals in eight competitive games this season, was treated for problems with his back left thigh in the 19th minute on Friday evening and was then substituted. Now the striker will probably miss Mainz’s duel in the second round of the DFB Cup against Bayern Munich on Wednesday (from 8:45 p.m. in the t-online live ticker).
Burkardt made his debut for the German national team on October 11th against Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-1) under national coach Julian Nagelsmann. He was also used as a substitute three days later against the Netherlands (1-0).
