With his inimitable style, Deniz Undav is one of the most popular national players. And his latest appearance is also well received by the fans.
The national team met in Herzogenaurach on Monday without Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz and Robin Koch, who were injured at short notice. Julian Nagelsmann newcomers Jamie Leweling (VfB Stuttgart), Jonathan Burkardt (Mainz 05) and Tim Kleindienst (Borussia Mönchengladbach) had a lot to do.
Not only were some of them (Leweling and Burkardt) spontaneously ordered to the training camp – they also had to introduce themselves to many people there, starting with the association’s social media team.
Jamie Leweling from VfB Stuttgart mastered this on Monday afternoon with a touch of shyness (“Jamie, hello”), Jonathan Burkardt (FSV Mainz 05) was much more robust. They all received a lesson in humility from Deniz Undav: The VfB striker, most recently the goalscorer against the Netherlands, carried his belongings not in a Gucci backpack, but in a blue garbage bag.
A performance that many fans of the national team also liked. A follower commented on Instagram: “All: backpack, bags, suitcases, Undav: trash bags.” Another follower made it clear: “You just have to love them. And Deniz with a new backpack.” Another woman wrote: “Some come with the Gucci suitcases and Undav with a garbage bag. Probably forgot the woman’s order to take out the garbage first.”
The national team doesn’t have much time to prepare. The away game against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Nations League is already scheduled for Friday in Zenica. The game in Munich against the Netherlands follows on Monday. Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos, İlkay Gündoğan and Manuel Neuer, who announced their resignation after the home European Championships, will also be farewelled there.
