Football, swimming and exploring forests are things of the past for teenagers. Instead, they spend a large part of their free time in front of the screen, according to a study by the health insurance company Pronova BKK. How parents can react to this.

According to a survey, children and young people aged ten and over spend more time on electronic devices than on analogue games and leisure activities. Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 sit in front of screens for 15 hours a week, using six hours more time to do so than for offline activities such as sports.

This is the result of the representative study “Young Families 2023” by the health insurance company Pronova BKK. To do this, 1,000 households with at least one child were surveyed. The newspapers of the Essen Funke media group first reported on the investigation.

According to the study, media use among younger people is roughly the same: ten to 13-year-olds use almost eleven hours of electronic media per week and spend ten hours playing games or playing sports. Even those under the age of three already consume more than four hours of digital media, as their parents stated in the survey.

The actual usage time is likely to be even higher. “Surveys of children often show much higher usage figures. Parents tend to minimize their children’s screen time,” explained social worker Clemens Beisel, who works with the BKK.

Around 80 percent of parents of three to nine year olds, 69 percent of parents of ten to 13 year olds and 43 percent of parents of 14 to 17 year olds set clear rules for screen time, the study also showed. A total of 61 percent have a bad conscience because they do not consistently enforce the rules.

In 83 percent of households with children there are arguments about the use of digital media. According to the survey, the main issue is duration (45 percent), but also media use while eating (36 percent) or at bedtime (30 percent).

So that guardians can better assess their children’s actual screen time, Beisel recommends that they acquire the technical knowledge to be able to read out the quantitative usage of their cell phones.

“With many messenger services, you can see in the settings how many messages are sent and received,” explained the social worker. As early as the 5th grade, some children receive several hundred messages per day. “Parents need to talk to their children about such numbers and think together about what is necessary and what is distracting.”
