Director Park Chan-wook expressed his thoughts on President Yoon Seok-yeol’s martial law situation.

MBC TV’s ‘Straight’, which aired on the 8th, covered the ⁢December 3 martial law emergency.

Director⁢ Park said in a phone interview with the ‘Straight’ production team⁣ after the announcement of‍ the filmmaker’s emergency statement on the 7th, “I think there is a need for at least one more person ⁣to participate and put pressure on the People ‌Power Party ⁣lawmakers in a‍ situation where‌ the impeachment vote is about ⁢to be held.”

‘All filmmakers Demanding ⁣Yoon Seok-yeol’s Resignation’, in which ⁢3,007 filmmakers, including 599 film directors,⁣ including ‌director Park‍ Chan-wook, and⁤ 81 ⁣organizations participated, ⁢released a statement titled ‘Remove and arrest Yoon Seok-yeol, who is guilty‍ of treason!’

They said in a statement, “The ⁣most risky ⁣person⁢ to the existence of the Republic of Korea is Yoon Seok-yeol. He said, “Removing the president from his duties is an urgent task to protect the democratic republic.” ‌“Now, for Korean filmmakers, Yoon Seok-yeol⁣ is⁢ no longer the president. He ⁣is merely an actual criminal of ⁢treason. He raised his voice,‍ saying, “Quickly⁢ suspend Yoon Seok-yeol from ‍his duties as ⁣president, remove⁢ him⁣ from office, and‌ imprison him.”

The national Assembly voted on the impeachment bill ⁣against President Yoon ⁢at ⁣the‍ plenary session on the 7th, but it was canceled due to lack of quorum as only 195 out of 300 registered members‍ participated ⁣in the vote.

For the impeachment bill to be‌ passed, 200 members, or two-thirds⁢ of the registered members, must vote in favor, but only 192⁢ lawmakers from the⁤ pan-opposition party, including the Democratic⁢ Party of Korea, and⁢ 3 lawmakers Ahn Cheol-soo, Kim ‌Sang-wook, ⁢and Kim Ye-ji from the People Power Party participated in⁤ the vote.

105 ‍People Power ⁢Party lawmakers did not participate in the vote.Prior to the plenary session, the People Power Party confirmed its ‘no vote’ on the impeachment bill for President Yoon and the special prosecution⁢ bill for First ‌Lady Kim Kun-hee.

The Democratic Party‍ of Korea plans to push‌ for⁢ impeachment again ‌by reinforcing ⁤the circumstances ⁣surrounding President Yoon’s treasonous crimes. The plan is⁣ to report the impeachment bill of ⁣President⁤ Yoon to the plenary session on the 12th, the second day of the unusual National Assembly, and submit it to a vote on the 14th.

    • How ‌does Park Chan-wook believe art and cinema⁣ can ⁢influence political ⁣and societal change in ‌South Korea?

interview between time.news Editor and Film Director Park Chan-wook

editor: Welcome,‌ Mr. Park ⁣Chan-wook. Thank‍ you for joining us today to discuss such a critical⁤ situation unfolding in South Korea regarding President Yoon Seok-yeol’s potential impeachment.

Park⁢ Chan-wook: Thank you for having me. It’s an honor to speak on⁢ this matter.

Editor: You recently stated that ‍it is urgent for Yoon Seok-yeol⁤ to be removed ⁤from office to protect the democratic integrity of South Korea. Could you elaborate⁢ on what led ⁣you and your fellow ⁣filmmakers to take such a strong stance?

Park Chan-wook: Absolutely.⁤ As artists and creators,⁤ we ‌deeply feel the ⁣responsibility‌ to ‍protect our democracy. The ‌statement ‌we released, which included over 3,000 filmmakers, highlights a collective concern that Yoon Seok-yeol⁢ poses a important threat to our Republic. A‍ president should uphold democratic values, and ⁣when ⁣they fail to do so, we ‍believe it is indeed critical ⁤to take action.

Editor: You⁤ mentioned that‌ “for Korean filmmakers, Yoon seok-yeol is‌ no⁣ longer the president. He is ‌merely an actual criminal‌ of treason.” That’s a powerful statement. What specific actions or policies⁤ have led to this ⁤characterization?

Park Chan-wook: ⁤Several of⁤ his actions have raised ⁣alarms⁢ among the public‌ and professionals alike.⁢ His repeated disregard for democratic norms, attempts to suppress⁤ dissent, and failure to address crucial‍ issues such as freedom of expression in our‌ culture make him unfit ‌for office. ⁣We ⁢feel that it is our duty to call out these injustices.

Editor: ⁣Understanding the gravity ⁣of this situation, how do you envision the ‌role of lawmakers in addressing these ⁢matters?⁤ You mentioned the⁣ need ⁢for more⁣ pressure to⁣ be applied. Can you expand on that?

Park Chan-wook: Yes, certainly. We believe that it‍ is imperative for more lawmakers to acknowledge and act against⁣ the ‍serious allegations surrounding ⁣President Yoon.‌ During the recent vote on the impeachment bill, the session was canceled ⁣due to a lack of quorum. This⁣ highlights a‌ significant political failure. Lawmakers⁤ must unite, prioritize ⁤the will ⁤of the people, ⁢and take decisive ⁣actions to ⁣uphold ⁢their ⁤responsibilities in a democracy.

Editor: The political ‌climate is indeed tense. What ⁤do you think the ⁤filmmakers’ movement signifies‌ for the⁢ wider society?

Park Chan-wook: ⁢Our movement is ‌not just about one⁣ person; it represents a broader struggle for ⁤what⁤ it‍ means ‌to be a democratic society. It’s about⁢ truth, accountability, and ensuring‌ that our voices—which reflect the‍ thoughts and sentiments of the public—are heard. We are ‍hopeful that by standing together, ‍we can inspire more citizens to engage ⁤and advocate ⁤for their rights.

editor: ⁢ How do ‌you see⁢ the⁤ role of art‍ and cinema in these⁤ societal discussions?

Park Chan-wook: Art has always been a mirror to society. It can provoke ‍thought, inspire action, and bring ⁢people together. As filmmakers, we have the unique ability to‌ tell stories that resonate⁤ deeply with people’s experiences and aspirations. This can mobilize support⁣ for greater civic ‌engagement and encourage dialog‍ about the direction we want for our future.

Editor: Thank you for sharing your insights, Mr.⁣ park. ⁣This situation requires not only political action‌ but ⁣also a societal awakening. We⁤ look forward to⁢ seeing how both the political landscape and the filmmaking community evolve ‌in the coming ‍days.

Park Chan-wook: Thank you. It’s vital we stay vigilant and continue to advocate for our democracy. I appreciate the possibility to speak about ⁤these‍ crucial issues.
