    The risk of so-called atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) was reduced by a full 20 percent in those study participants who climbed more than five flights of stairs every day.

    ASCVD refers to diseases caused by plaque buildup in the arteries. The cause is usually arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries, atherosclerosis). The vascular disease causes the arteries to narrow and harden due to deposits.

    For their study, researchers led by Zimin Song from the School of Public Health at Peking University in China evaluated data from 458,860 adults from Great Britain. To better compare the data, the scientists equated ASCVD with coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke. “Climbing more than five floors (approximately 50 steps) daily was associated with a lower risk of ASCVD, regardless of disease susceptibility. “Participants who stopped climbing stairs between the start of the study and the repeat survey (editor’s note: a repeat survey was conducted five years after the study) had a higher risk of ASCVD compared to those who never climbed stairs,” the researchers wrote in their study. which appeared in the journal “Atherosclerosis”.

    “Compared to people who reported not climbing stairs in both surveys, those who climbed stairs at baseline and then reported stopping at the resurvey had a 32 percent higher risk of ASCVD,” said the researchers.
