It has been raised that hair loss treatment drugs, which are widely used in Korea, may cause suicidal impulses. Accordingly, the domestic Ministry of Food and Drug Safety began reviewing it.

The European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) Safety Management Committee (PRAC) investigated anti-hair loss drugs, including the hair loss drug ingredients ‘Finasteride’ and ‘Dutasteride’ and their generic drugs from the 30th of last month to the 3rd.

PRAC began a review of the two ingredients. After review, EMA plans to recommend whether the marketing authorization for the medicine should be withdrawn, suspended or maintained.

In the case of finasteride and dutasteride, the risk of psychiatric side effects such as suicidal thoughts has been consistently raised.

An official from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said, “The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety was aware of this and immediately began reviewing it,” and added, “If the causal relationship between the ingredients and side effects of the hair loss treatment is clearly confirmed, we will also take additional measures.”

Organon, a company spun off from MSD, a global pharmaceutical company, sells ‘Propecia’ (finasteride), a treatment for male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia), and ‘Proscar’ (same ingredient), a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). . GSK in the UK is selling a hair loss treatment under the name ‘Avodart’ (dutasteride).

However, the French regulator, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Sciences (ANSM), recently ordered that all data on suicidal ideation and suicide in relation to products containing finasteride and dutasteride, as well as any potential risks, should be reviewed to determine the impact on the benefit-risk balance of such products. It has been claimed.

Generic drugs produced by domestic pharmaceutical companies are also being actively distributed. There are 216 types of generic drugs for finasteride and 114 types of generic drugs for dutasteride that have received product approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

These two ingredients were approved as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, but they received indication for their efficacy and effectiveness in treating alopecia in adult men. However, as it can cause side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and depression, you must seek guidance from a doctor or pharmacist when prescribing or taking it.

The Korean Hair Loss Association estimates that the number of people suffering from hair loss in Korea is approximately 10 million, or 1 in 5 people. The size of the hair loss treatment market is estimated to be approximately 120 billion won.
