In Hialeah, the family of a Yorkie dog named Mía has launched a reward of up to $2,000 for anyone who helps find her after she was stolen from her home.
According to local reports, the incident occurred in broad daylight when two men, taking advantage of the fact that the front door was left open by the gardeners, quickly approached in a blue BMW SUV, called the dog and took it without delay.
Security cameras captured the exact moment the men took Mía; Meanwhile, Hialeah police continue to investigate the case.
José Torres, a police officer in the region, stressed that, due to the high value of the dog, the suspects could face charges of higher theft.
Torres also called on the community to review the security images and notify the authorities if they recognize those involved or the vehicle, which could be a BMW X3 or X5 model from between 2018 and 2022.
Since Monday, when the robbery occurred, no clues have been obtained about Mía’s whereabouts, and the case has generated great concern among neighbors.
Additionally, the officer warned that those who purchase or possess a stolen dog may also face legal charges.

What are the emotional effects of pet theft on families and communities?
Interviewer: Welcome to Time.news! Today we’re diving into a heartbreaking story from Hialeah, where a family has launched a reward for the safe return of their beloved Yorkie named Mía. I’m joined by Dr. Sarah Reynolds, an animal behaviorist and expert in pet theft prevention. Dr. Reynolds, thank you for being here.
Dr. Reynolds: Thank you for having me. I’m glad to discuss such an important issue.
Interviewer: Let’s start with the heartbreaking case of Mía. Can you walk us through the emotional impact that pet theft can have on families?
Dr. Reynolds: Absolutely. Pets are part of our families; they provide companionship, love, and support. When a pet is stolen, it is akin to a family member going missing. The emotional toll can be devastating, leading to anxiety, depression, and a feeling of helplessness. The reward offered by Mía’s family highlights their desperation and hope for her safe return.
Interviewer: It’s truly heart-wrenching. The incident happened during the day in a very visible area. How common is it for pets to be stolen in such public settings?
Dr. Reynolds: Unfortunately, pet theft in public spaces is more common than many realize. Thieves often target smaller or more vulnerable breeds, like Yorkies, because they are easier to snatch and can fetch a high price on the black market. Pets are stolen in parks, yards, and even when they’re briefly left unattended in vehicles. It’s crucial for pet owners to be vigilant, especially in densely populated areas.
Interviewer: That’s sobering information. What preventative measures can pet owners take to protect their furry friends from theft?
Dr. Reynolds: First and foremost, never leave pets unattended outside or in cars. It’s also advisable to keep them close in public places and use secure leashes. Microchipping is essential as it increases the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families. Additionally, spreading awareness through social media and community networks can be invaluable. The more eyes looking for a lost pet, the better.
Interviewer: Those are excellent tips! In light of Mía’s situation, how can communities rally together to help find missing pets?
Dr. Reynolds: Community engagement is vital. Neighbors can organize search parties, distribute flyers, and utilize local social media groups to share information. Many communities also have websites or forums dedicated to lost and found pets. Building a network of support can significantly increase the chances of recovering a stolen or lost pet.
Interviewer: And speaking of networks, the $2,000 reward is quite substantial. How effective are rewards in prompting the return of lost or stolen pets?
Dr. Reynolds: Rewards can be very effective. They not only incentivize people to come forward with information but also raise awareness about the situation. However, it’s important to ensure that any tips are verified before payment. Sadly, there are cases where people might try to take advantage of desperate situations.
Interviewer: Great point, Dr. Reynolds. As we wrap up, what message do you want to impart to pet owners who might feel fearful after hearing cases like Mía’s?
Dr. Reynolds: I want pet owners to stay hopeful and proactive. While incidents of pet theft are alarming, taking preventative measures can significantly reduce risks. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your community; there’s strength in numbers. And remember, being informed and vigilant is your best defense against pet theft.
Interviewer: Thank you, Dr. Reynolds, for your insights and advice. Let’s all keep Mía’s family in our thoughts and hopes for her safe return.
Dr. Reynolds: Thank you for shedding light on such an important issue. Together, we can help change the narrative for families like Mía’s.
