An inmate was found dead on Friday in Besançon prison, apparently by hanging, we learned on Saturday from the public prosecutor’s office. This news comes a few days after the death of two other inmates in the same establishment by overdose.

The detainee, aged 37, was found in his cell on Friday morning, said the Besançon prosecutor’s office, confirming information from France 3.

He was sentenced in December in immediate appearance to 10 months in prison for having threatened firefighters who were helping him with a knife while he was clearly drunk.

An investigation into the causes of death has been opened, an autopsy must be carried out in the coming days.

Recently changed neighborhood

“It was a well-identified psychiatric situation, he had been taken out some time ago to see a psychiatrist, and we had even changed his neighborhood so that he was more closely monitored, but unfortunately, we cannot control everything », Regretted Christophe Vernerey, Ufap-Unsa delegate at the remand center.

This death comes after two fellow prisoners, aged 34 and 36, had already been found dead in their cell on December 29, victims of a fatal cocktail of medication and drugs.

“There it was a drug problem, and there was a lot to say,” continued Christophe Vernerey. “We are suffering: the prisons are not watertight in France, and we put traffickers in the same establishments with consumers, trafficking is accentuated. There are packages that are parachuted from outside, there are three guards for 150 inmates.” “It’s complicated to manage,” admitted the union representative.
