PSOE and Sumar signed an agreement a few days ago to once again form a coalition government. The star measure of the pact has sparked great controversy and has caused numerous experts, among whom is the prestigious economist Santiago Niño Becerra, to speak out on the matter. This is the reduction of the working day from 40 to 37.5 hours without a decrease in salary, something that they have proposed to implement progressively until 2025.

The agreement, which also includes the increase in the minimum wage, has put business owners on alert, asking them to begin studying the possibility of carrying it out and what consequences it will bring. Niño Becerra has written through his profile on X (former Twitter) what he thinks of this new measure. The professor and doctor in economics believes that “it is a mistake that will have consequences because each sector, each activity and each company is a world.”

Niño Becerra specifies that he does not disagree with the measure as such, but rather with the way it is implemented in a general way and without evaluating each case individually. This statement is accompanied by a past practical example: that of the company ‘Desigual’.

This clothing brand, as it explains, applied the reduction of working hours with an exclusive plan for this, with which they evaluated the sections of the company in which it could be carried out. According to him, the system of reducing working time by 15% and salary by 6% is working satisfactorily.

In this case, it has worked, in the opinion of Niño Becerra, because it is a plan created solely and exclusively for that specific company, implying that introducing the reduction of working hours without reducing the salary in general would not be something positive.
