El Salvador continues its rise as one of the main surf tourist destinations globally. This week, El Sunzal beach, in the department of La Libertad, becomes the setting for the Surf City El Salvador Longboard Championships, an event that brings together the best longboarders in the world.

It is the second time that the World Surf League (WSL) organizes a competition in the country, and marks the fourth international tournament of the 2024 season on the Salvadoran coast.

The Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, highlighted the importance of this type of events to consolidate the growth of tourism in El Salvador, especially around surfing.

“Thank you for being here again in El Salvador, in Surf City, the place with the best waves in the world for longboarders,” said Valdez in a press conference, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to continue promoting this sporting discipline.

This championship is not only a window to show the quality of Salvadoran waves, but also an opportunity for the country to crown, for the first time in its history, a longboard world champion. Within the framework of the Surf City strategy, promoted by President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador seeks to consolidate itself as an international benchmark in both longboarding and traditional surfing.

Valdez highlighted the fundamental role of surfing in the country’s tourism transformation: “That is what we want from the Government of President Nayib Bukele, to dignify longboarding and obviously also surfing, not only here in El Salvador but in the world.” With initiatives like these, El Salvador consolidates itself as a world-class surfing destination, attracting not only the best athletes, but also thousands of tourists looking to enjoy its beaches and the safe and vibrant environment that the country offers.
