The Elder Scrolls 6: Release Date Remains Distant, No Reveal Planned for The Game Awards
Despite fervent speculation, gamers shouldn’t anticipate a reveal of The Elder Scrolls 6 at The Game Awards on December 11. A well-connected source at Bloomberg has definitively denied rumors that Bethesda’s highly anticipated action RPG would headline the event, reinforcing previous statements from Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard regarding the game’s development timeline.
Following the sharing of an elaborate statue on social media by The Game Awards, online communities erupted with theories. Some, including those at Windows Central, predicted the artwork signaled an expansion for Diablo 4. However, the most prominent speculation centered on a potential first look at The Elder Scrolls 6. Unfortunately, these hopes were quickly dashed.
“I will do this one more time because people are getting out of control: no, the statue is not a nod to Elder Scrolls 6. Now I’m going to stop answering about this,” stated a prominent industry insider on the ResetEra forums, effectively shutting down the rumors.
The reality is that a comeback for The Elder Scrolls 6 at The Game Awards was always considered a long shot. During the 2023 Activision Blizzard legal challenge, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer indicated the game’s launch is at least five years away. Announced originally at E3 2018, progress has been limited, with Bethesda’s focus shifting to the development and release of Starfield.
However, development is ongoing. Howard recently confirmed the existence of a playable build, though he cautioned that a release is “still a long way off.” He suggested the game could be unveiled unexpectedly, mirroring the surprise release of Oblivion Remastered. This possibility is a key reason why fans continue to monitor events like The Game Awards for any potential news.
Following the tradition established by Skyrim, the release of The Elder Scrolls 6 will almost certainly feature a vast and immersive open world. The sheer scale of the game’s potential setting could be a significant factor in the extended development time, mirroring the immense expectations surrounding titles like GTA 6.
As anticipation mounts, speculation has turned to other potential announcements from Geoff Keighley’s event. God of War was a popular prediction, but Santa Monica Studio’s creative director Cory Barlog quickly dismissed the possibility.
At this point, the gaming community remains eager for any concrete information regarding The Elder Scrolls 6, but it appears a reveal is not imminent.
