About 70% of the world’s greenhouse gases come from energy, but about 20% – for agriculture.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Trend, this was said by the Deputy Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, Executive Director COP29 Elnur Soltanov at the international symposium “Sustainability and innovation in agriculture and water management in light of COP29“, held at ADA University.

“Agriculture is, in fact, the second largest source of greenhouse gases after the energy sector. And what makes agriculture even more important is that it all depends on how you define it,” he said.

Elnur Soltanov mentioned that forests and land absorb large amounts of greenhouse gases. Therefore, these areas are very valuable and therefore people need to have good agricultural skills.

“This is very important from the point of view of reducing greenhouse gases. But at the same time, we must protect farmers, who in most cases in many economies, including Azerbaijan, are usually more vulnerable. Especially in developing countries,” he added.

It should be noted that the ADA University, together with the embassies of Hungary, Italy and Kazakhstan in Azerbaijan, is hosting the international symposium “Sustainability and Innovation in Agriculture and Water Resources Management in the Light of COP29”.

The event, attended by scientists as well as local and international experts, covers global and regional perspectives, with a particular focus on the impact of climate change.
