After talking about early elections in Türkiye, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke for the first time about the possibility of running for a new presidential term, stressing that he did not rule out the idea.
On Saturday, Erdogan attended a party meeting of the Justice and Development Party in the city of Sanliurfa in southeastern Türkiye. During the meeting, Erdogan spoke with the famous Turkish singer Ibrahim Tatlis, who asked him whether Erdogan intended to run for president again in the upcoming elections. Erdogan responded to him: “If you support that, then I support that too.”
The Turkish President’s chief advisor, Mehmet Ochum, previously stated that President Erdogan would be able to run for the presidency again if Parliament decided to hold early presidential elections in 2027.
In 2017, a referendum was held in Türkiye to amend the constitution, which stipulates the right of the head of state to assume office during two consecutive terms. In May 2023, Erdogan was re-elected as President of Turkey for the second time after the adoption of the constitutional amendments, after another term for him in the presidency between 2014 and 2018, before the constitutional amendments that transformed Turkey from a parliamentary republic into a presidential system.
