The Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile USA has reported numerous hacker attacks on the group’s systems in recent weeks. ⁢Customer data was not stolen.

The US telecommunications group T-Mobile confirms several ‍hacker attacks on its systems in recent‍ weeks. “However,‌ the attackers did not have access to sensitive customer data such as ⁢calls, voice messages or SMS,” said Jeff Simon, ⁣T-Mobile’s chief security officer. Internal defensive measures would have protected customer data,⁣ prevented service disruption and stopped the‌ attack⁣ from advancing further. It is still unclear who is behind it.

The statement follows reports of Salt Typhoon, a suspected Chinese cyber espionage operation against US telecommunications companies. A T-Mobile spokesman admitted that the⁣ attackers’ approach ‍had similarities to ⁢Salt typhoon. ⁢Though, it is indeed unclear whether ⁣this was actually this group.

Salt Typhoon is also known as Earth Estries,FamousSparrow,Ghost Emperor and UNC2286. The group has allegedly been active since ⁣2019 and has so far focused primarily on infiltrating government agencies and telecommunications companies in Southeast Asia.

According to⁤ a report in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the ‌hacker group managed to attack the cell phone lines of high-ranking US ‌politicians and security officials and steal call logs, text messages ‍and audio data.

In a statement earlier this week, the US government confirmed that the hackers had stolen call data, communications data from targets, and facts about law enforcement requests sent to‌ telecommunications companies, ‍according to WSJ.

The⁤ FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) are currently investigating a “broad ‍and meaningful cyber espionage campaign” with ties to China, it said. According ⁢to media reports, along with T-Mobile, AT&T, ‍Verizon and Lumen are also said to have been affected by the attacks.
