In the mountains as at the seaside, your skin must be protected. Melanoma has no seasons and because of this very reason you should never let your guard down.A warning is issued,inviting greater attention and prudence in view of the upcoming Christmas holidays,by Paolo A. Ascierto, president of the melanoma Foundation and director of the Melanoma Oncology, oncology Immunotherapy and Innovative therapies Unit of the Pascale Institute of Naples, on the occasion of the tenth edition of Immunotherapy and melanoma Bridge, which ends today in Naples.
the invitation is thus not to be fooled by low temperatures and to protect the skin from cancer in winter as in summer, following a few simple common sense rules. Here are 6 tips:
1) Apply a Broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ protection factor on all areas of the skin not protected by clothing, such as the face, neck and hands;
2) Be careful about ‘recycling’ sunscreen from last summer. It is indeed true that in most cases its effectiveness lasts up to 12 months after opening the package, but this only applies if it has been stored correctly with the cap tightly closed and not exposed to high temperatures;
3) Wear a hat or helmet for added protection when skiing, snowshoeing, sledding or snowboarding.
4) Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection or anti-UV protective glasses. In fact, melanoma can also affect the eye;
5) Do aself-assessment of your skin to see if there are new moles or ones that have changed their appearance. The rule to follow is that of the Abcde: A for asymmetry in the shape, melanoma may not have it; B as irregular edges; D for dimensions, i.e. increase in width and thickness; And as an evolution, because melanoma can manifest itself with changes in a few weeks or months;
6) Remember to do the periodic check-up by a specialist. Our eyes cannot always see all the anomalies. In fact,melanoma does not only occur on the body,but can also appear on the scalp,on the mucous membranes (mouth,genitals) and even under the nails. It may not even be colored black-brown, but appear pinkish.
