It was alleged that an unpublished public opinion poll by the Future Korea Research Institute, which is known to have been run by Myung Tae-gyun, was used as data for the then People Power Party candidate Yoon Seok-yeol’s camp until the day of the presidential election on March 9, 2022. Shin Shin-han, a visiting professor at Seowon University who served as the head of policy support at the camp at the time, said on the 27th, “On the day of the presidential election (March 9), I received the Future Korea Research Institute’s opinion poll report from the camp.” In relation to this, the Democratic Party of Korea plans to call Professor Shin as a witness for the National Assembly Steering Committee audit of state affairs on the 1st of next month, saying, “The emergency exit of the illegal gate has been opened.”
Professor Shin said in a phone call with the Dong-A Ilbo that day, “We discussed the results of the opinion poll at the strategic coordination meeting held until the day of the presidential election.” He added, “As most of the results of the meetings held every day until then were reported to the candidates, it is likely that the results of the opinion poll were also reported to President Yoon. “There is a high possibility,” he said. He continued, “Recently, while looking through an external hard drive where I had collected camp materials, I came across the name ‘Future Korea Research Institute.’” He added, “I don’t even know Mr. Myeong.” Kang Hye-kyung, who worked as a working-level employee at the Future Korea Research Institute, recently appeared as a witness before the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly and disclosed a recording of a phone call in which Mr. Myeong said, “I have to report to Yoon Seok-yeol every day.”
Mr. Myeong claimed that he had never reported any unpublished opinion polls to Candidate Yoon’s side, and the President’s Office also took the same position.
Professor Shin’s claim directly contradicts this, and if the content is true, there is a possibility of violating the political fund law as Candidate Yoon’s camp has never paid for the poll to the Future Korea Institute. The Democratic Party went on the offensive, saying, “There is evidence that Mr. Myeong’s illegal opinion poll was used as official data for Yoon Seok-yeol’s camp until the day of the presidential election.” Senior Supreme Council member Kim Min-seok argued at a press conference that day, “The People Power Party of the Josategi Party, a descendant of the Chattegi Party, must immediately declare a major crime against the public and cooperate with the investigation, and prepare for the dissolution of the party due to illegal activities.”
The Democratic Party plans to call Professor Shin as a witness for the National Assembly audit of the President’s Office, etc., to be held on the 1st of next month. In response to this, Professor Shin expressed his intention to attend, saying, “I have not committed a crime, and all I have to do is tell the truth about what happened.”
On the other hand, passport officials who worked in Yoon’s camp at the time all refuted the claim, saying it was not true. One camp official said, “We have never discussed public opinion polls in strategy meetings. “At the time, I didn’t even know the name Myung Tae-gyun.” Another official also said, “I have never seen such a report,” and added, “(Professor Shin) is a person who ran for the Democratic Party. Should we trust what he says?”
Ahead of the 22nd general election, Professor Shin joined the Democratic Party as the 15th candidate to be recruited and ran in the Cheongju petition primary, but did not receive a nomination.
