A very strange story had begun today 40 years ago and had occupied her AEK. Despite the fact that the Athenian team had won cleanly and fairly at the home of Aris with 2-1, they risked losing the match on paper due to a formal omission.

This omission concerned the medical reports of the team’s players, which had remained unexamined for over two months. At a time when PAE AEK was underperforming at all levels (the team had finished 7th at the end of the season, while Kostas Nestoridis had been recruited for the second time in a year in the role of service coach) and which reminded – according to an earlier confession of the main player of – “amateur club of the time”, such phenomena were frequent.

The outbreak of AEK

Unfortunately, the competitive image was also different. After four matches without a win, AEK beat Olympiakos in Nea Filadelfia and then went to Harilaou. There he found himself in the lead with an own goal by Ole Skoboe and a shot by Thomas Mavros in the 16th minute and kept the victory despite the fact that Aris reduced too early (24′) with Zindros.

Immediately after the match, however, the ticket issue arose. Aris objected and for a few days the press wrote that AEK would not escape the punishment. Finally, at the trial, a doctor from Thessaloniki appeared before the sports judge, who had gone to the stadium to stamp the medical cards of the AEK players, but had… stumbled upon the formality of the officials of PAE Aris. He was not allowed to enter the stadium in time and the match started and ended without a visa.

AEK was acquitted and kept the points, while Aris was paid with the same currency 13 years later, when they were relegated for the first time to B’Henikki. In a match against Athinaikos in Byron, the team bus left with the tickets locked in it and Aris was zeroed out, losing the points that could have saved him!

The composition of AEK: Arvanitis, Stylianopoulos, Paraprastanitis, Letsas, Karagiozopoulos, Balis (40′ Christopoulos) Dintsikos, Ardizoglou, Hatziioannidis (61′ Kottis) Vlachos, Mavros
