The former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, said this on Sunday 27 October “hooded men” he had fired fourteen shots at his vehicle and injured his driver, in Cochabamba, central Bolivia. “The car I arrived in was hit by 14 shots. This surprised me. Luckily today we are alive (…). It was hooded men who shot (…). It was expected, it was to kill Evo”he said in an interview with Kawsachun Coca radio station.

ON on the Facebook pageEvo Morales released a video shot from inside a moving car, showing him sitting in the passenger seat, with bullet holes in the windshield. It appears the driver was injured but continued driving. The authenticity of these images could not immediately be established.

This episode occurs in a troubled context in Bolivia. For two weeks the country has been hit by checkpoints and clashes between supporters of Evo Morales and the police, which have resulted, according to the government, in 14 police officers injured and 44 civilians arrested. In total, more than twenty checkpoints were reported, most of them in the state of Cochabamba (central-west), the political stronghold of the former president, the first indigenous person to lead Bolivia (2006-2019).

This weekend, Bolivian President Luis Arce appointed new military leaders and called for a return to law and order. “In the current situation, society imperatively asks us, the government and the armed forces (…) to preserve the highest interests of the country such as state security and the restoration of public order”stated the Head of State, in the night between Saturday and Sunday, presenting the new military General Staff in La Paz.
