Not everyone has their eyes measured in time and if there are problems with vision or perception, people end up at the optician. Hans Korse, who has been for 22 years a shop in Amsterdam’s Cornelis Schuytstraat, recommends reading glasses and reading lenses. Because that is simply possible, while it is not always so clear.

Visually set

After the age of 40, everyone’s close-up focus deteriorates. “Nowadays we often spend most of the day behind a screen, such as an iPad, telephone or computer. We are very visual, but our eyes get tired. As experts, we want people to be as relaxed as possible behind a screen. Then it is up to the customer himself what he prefers: glasses, reading lenses, or multifocal contact lenses.”

Glasses during the day, lenses at night

Just as an example: during the day you can choose glasses for your work behind a screen, so that you can look more relaxed. If you go out at night, you can wear contact lenses. “Then you can clearly see what is on your plate. You do sacrifice something in terms of looking into the distance.”

It is striking that Hans hardly sells any ‘office glasses’ for reading and screen anymore. “It’s just the way it is: with reading glasses you can only do one thing and that is to read. And most eyes are a bit more complex. You have two different eyes that are not tuned exactly the same. So you are not easily done with just reading glasses of a few euros at the drugstore. It is best to have your eyes measured properly.”

Observing instead of looking

Hans nowadays calls his work ‘making people perceive’ instead of showing. “It’s our job to map out everything about you. Who are you, what do you do, what are your expectations of glasses or contact lenses?”

Association with aging

The choice for reading lenses often has to do with not wanting to look older, says Hans. “The fact that your eyes are getting worse gives away your age. Not everyone likes that. There’s still plenty to do. For example, instead of glasses or contact lenses, you can also opt for laser treatment or have a new lens implanted in your eye. They can do anything these days.”
