A timid attempt to bring us the action of the 1997 film
As a fan of Spaceship soldiers (I must confess it’s my favorite), I hoped so Extermination It transported me into the action of the 1997 classic, which with its “knowing how to laugh at yourself” was a real event. The truth is that this franchise very well deserves a game on par with the cult film, but it’s only close Helldivers 2.
Who doesn’t love a good killing of giant insects with a hail of bullets from an infantry squad? Who won’t like it? Well yes, I expected much more after the envy of not being able to play (at the moment Arrowhead‘s GaaS), but Starship Troopers: Extermination did not meet my expectations at all.
Get citizenship
As you all know, and if I don’t tell you, this game is based on a dystopian future where humanity has experienced profound political and social change. Furthermore, space travel is possible, but we are also attacked by a deadly alien race: insects. Yes, just like the 1997 film.
Now we have the opportunity to be part of the squadron of the decorated General Johny Rico, voiced by himself. Casper Van Diemor play with up to 15 other players in online games with endless hordes of insects. You decide which direction to take as you wish.
Simulating a large-scale war against arachnids and other insects is the idea of the game, although with the exception of the horde mode, which is the film with the most massive battles, the rest is simple and boring. Although it is a game as a service and will continue to receive content, so let’s hope they fix the flaws of the title.
A deadly team
In individual mode, commanded by General Rico, a team of 5 soldiers will face specific missions against insects, such as building certain elements, cleaning specific insect caves or eliminating the largest and most deadly ones. It always feels sloppy in terms of mission design, so this mode is pretty bland.
There are several classes to choose from, from the typical sniper, to doctor, to engineer, etc., but in reality they all look pretty much the same. However, as you level up, you can develop class-specific skills and give it a little more distinction. But what the gameplay is, it doesn’t change much between one class and another.
The AI is not very successful, in addition to presenting problems due to the system of accumulation of insect corpses, which do not disappear and despite the studio’s promises, not only do they interfere with the performance of the game, but the robots remain blocked and it is not possible get them out of there.
Build to take on the hordes
As for the multiplayer mode, the most advantageous of Starship Troopers: Extermination, we will be able to play online with up to 16 players and collaborate to face hordes of insects. Construction is essential for creating defenses, providing support and ammunition, but the tool itself is rather bulky and not easy to handle.
As we have already said, it is a game as a service and missions and rewards are available on certain days, which is an incentive to get hooked on the game. I’m afraid that if it isn’t very successful, it will be difficult to find a game, so I hope that little by little the studio finds the key to keeping interest alive by improving the game.
The Galactic Front mode depends on the formation of a clan, but the system of adding members depends on the matches of the games, because it is not possible to recruit via message or via friends list. It’s a shame that they depend on this and don’t offer other simpler alternatives.
Technically very obsolete
The most general opinion is that the game is fun, but with a slightly high price for the quality it offers, even more so if we bought it together with other much more refined, spectacular and technically superior titles. Graphically it is clearly from other past generations.
The characters all look the same and almost unchanged even if you purchase cosmetic packs. And being in first person, you lose that charisma that the film had, but the problems are not just visual, given that the performance on consoles is irregular. But if you take into account the fact that graphics do not require much machine.
The animations are rather mediocre in the bugs, which make very fast erratic movements inappropriate for one’s behavior. But what I liked least is the shooting, the fundamental part of the game and it doesn’t work as I would like (even more so being a lifelong FPS player).
The game has English voices and Spanish text, but I couldn’t translate the narrator into subtitles, which may be fixed in future patches.
Conclusion
Starship Troopers: Extermination is a title that, despite its name, does not offer the emotion and charisma of the classic film from the late 90s and is, for me, a bit of a disappointment. While the hordes can be fun, the unintuitive building system, failures to open supplies or perform certain actions by pressing a button are a nightmare, ruining the experience 100%.
We believe that future updates will fix some errors, but there are things like the shooting that cannot be changed overnight, and it seems to me to be a fundamental feature in this type of game.
