The Wall Street Journal reported that the Meta group and its platforms, Instagram and Facebook, are suspected of facilitating and making profits from illegal drug sales, prompting federal prosecutors to open a criminal investigation in 2023.

The American newspaper said that subpoenas and interrogations were carried out as part of the procedures before a grand jury. The jury must decide whether the two “Meta” platforms facilitate and benefit from illegal drug sales and should therefore be prosecuted.

The Wall Street Journal also stated that it had seen the subpoenas issued in 2023, and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supports this federal investigation, according to the newspaper.

But a spokeswoman for Meta stated, “The illegal sale of medicines contravenes our policy, and we are working to find this content and remove it from our services,” according to Agence France-Presse. She added: Meta is proactively cooperating with law enforcement authorities to help combat the illegal sale and distribution of medicines.

According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 700,000 people died between 1999 and 2022 in the United States due to overdoses related to taking opioids obtained by prescription or illegally.
