Fake site to buy ‘date-rape drug’ records over 10,000 order attempts

by time news

The GHB molecule, also known as the “rape drug”, unfortunately popular in nightclubs, is the subject of an awareness campaign led by the government and associations. Posters and leaflets are distributed in nightclubs to communicate the dangers of this substance, as it is also often used in a “recreational” way. To have even more impact and to attack in particular the ease of access to drugs on the Internet, the “Play Safe” association has created a fake site for the sale of GHB.

Educate the consumer directly where he thinks he can find the drug

Noting that GHB consumers are mainly supplied on the Internet, the president of Play Safe, Michel Mau, had the idea of launching dummy sites, as detailed by France Inter. On this site, after having filled his basket, as one could do on any e-commerce site, a message alerts the consumer: “This is not a shopping site”, and presents the list the risks and penalties incurred in the event of the purchase of such a substance.

Decipher the demand and profile of buyers

The site has logged more than 10,000 order attempts since its launch two years ago. According to Marie-Emmanuelle Llinares, deputy president of “Play Safe”, this tool also makes it possible to have an idea of the scale of the phenomenon, to know the profile of consumers, who turn out to be mainly men aged 30 to 40 years located in the five largest regions of France. Happy with the result, the association has launched similar sites to “trap” consumers of other types of drugs.
