A Chinese man who had been buying lottery tickets using numbers combined with his family’s birthdays won first prize for the first time in seven years and received 24 million yuan (about 4.562 billion won).

On the 2nd (local time), Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) introduced the story of a man who won first place in the Chinese welfare lottery ‘Double Color Ball’ announced on the 10th of last month.

Mr. Huang, who lives in Hefei, Anhui Province, central China, purchased a 10 yuan (about 1,900 won) double-color lottery ticket with the numbers he had chosen as usual.

The double-color ball lottery, launched in 2003, is the most popular lottery in China. This method involves betting on 6 red balls and 1 blue ball. The more participants, the bigger the winnings.

Mr. Hwang used to buy lottery tickets with random numbers, but since 2017, he has been buying lottery tickets with numbers combined with the birthdays of his family members. This is after hearing that someone who bought a lottery ticket in the same way won first place.

After that, I patiently bought lottery tickets using my family’s birthday number for the next 7 years and finally won first place. Until now, I have never spent more than 20 yuan (about 3,800 won) at a time to buy lottery tickets.

Mr. Hwang said, “I didn’t buy the lottery ticket expecting to win a jackpot. The reason I usually buy lottery tickets was to support a charity (by contributing money to the lottery fund), and I thought winning was just a bonus. “I never thought I would actually win first place,” he said.

Immediately after receiving the winnings, he donated 100,000 yuan (about 19 million won) to a charity organization in Anhui Province. He said he plans to use the remaining amount to improve his family’s living environment, including purchasing a house.
