One of the emblems of the coaching profession – Sven-Goran Eriksson, lived his dream of leading “Liverpool”.
The 76-year-old Swede announced at the beginning of 2024 that a cancer disease was leading him to death, and doctors did not give him more than a year to live. Eriksson said then that he always dreamed of leading the legendary “Liverpool”.
The English club responded and invited the Swede to coach the veterans in the match between the Merseyside legends and the Dutch giant Ajax.
Eriksson was applauded wildly upon his appearance at the Anfield Stadium.
Nearly 60,000 supporters welcomed the former England coach.
Liverpool legends John Barnes, John Aldridge and Ian Rush lined up alongside Eriksson on the Reds bench.
Earlier in the day, 19-time English champions manager Jurgen Klopp visited Eriksson at the hotel.
“Liverpool” won 4:2 after trailing 0:2 at the break. The names of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres appeared in the composition led by Eriksson.
Derk Burichter and Kiki Musampa gave the Dutch side the lead, but goals from Gregory Vinal, Djibril Cisse, Nabil El Jarr and Torres brought about the turnaround.
