Frankfurt Airport is increasingly relying on biometrics, digital facial recognition, for passenger processes. This technology has been available to passengers of Lufthansa and Star Alliance airlines in Frankfurt since 2020. Now all airlines and passengers in Frankfurt can use check-in machines with biometric identity and identification verification, as Pierre Dominique Prümm, Board Member for Aviation and Infrastructure at Fraport AG, said on Thursday in Frankfurt. Frankfurt is therefore a leader in this matter across Europe.

Fraport’s goal is to equip at least 50 percent of all check-in machines as well as boarding pass controls and departure gates, the so-called touchpoints, with the new technology in the next few months. The airport operator is working with the IT service provider Sita and the Japanese electronics group NEC. The two companies have developed the biometric process, which in the future will enable all passengers in Frankfurt to go through the various checkpoints “with just a single glance”.

With the Lufthansa and Star Alliance service program, passengers can virtually register at home. This works either via smartphone or with Star Alliance Biometrics – via the website of the participating airline.

What has been new since Thursday is that passengers from every other airline can now also biometrically identify themselves for the upcoming flight at the new check-in machines in Frankfurt, although the respective airline must agree to this procedure for data protection reasons. If this is the case, these passengers can also go through the checkpoints equipped with facial recognition technology, such as boarding pass checks and boarding gates, without having to show any documents.

The data for this biometric registration, which is limited to individual flights, is reportedly deleted after three hours. You can also register permanently with Lufthansa and Star Alliance. According to Fraport, this and registration from home should also be possible with the system now presented.

David Lavorel, CEO of Sita, reported on Thursday that the airlines were very interested. Such automated, time-saving solutions demonstrably increase passenger customer satisfaction. According to Fraport, more than 12,000 passengers at Frankfurt Airport now use the biometric method.

Regardless of this, you still have to go through the aviation security check, for which Fraport is now switching to fast CT scanners. This means it is no longer necessary to take electronics or liquids out of your hand luggage, which also saves time. So-called “walk-through scanners” are also being tested at security checks, which are intended to enable reliable body checks while passengers walk through the arc-shaped device at walking speed.
