While FC Bayern experienced a debacle during the week, the record champions got their frustration off their chest in Bochum. Several dream goals were scored.
FC Bayern has regained the top spot in the Bundesliga. The German record champions celebrated a clear 5-0 (2-0) victory at VfL Bochum on Sunday. Vincent Kompany’s team suffered a 4-1 debacle at FC Barcelona in the Champions League during the week. The bottom of the league now felt the pent-up frustration of Munich. Bayern are in first place with 20 points, RB Leipzig, also with 20 points, is hot on their heels.
Bayern’s Michael Olise paved the way to Munich’s victory with his remarkable free kick goal to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute. Returnee Jamal Musiala once again showed how important he is for the team. He kept spinning around in the Bochum defense and contributed FCB’s first header of the season (26th minute). Harry Kane (57th), Leroy Sané (65th) and Kingsley Coman (71st) also scored dream goals to make the final score 5-0.
Compared to the Champions League humiliation in Catalonia, Kompany rebuilt his team in three positions. Defensive man Konrad Laimer and the two offensive wizards Musiala and Coman moved into the starting line-up for Raphaël Guerreiro, Thomas Müller and Serge Gnabry.
However, the start of the game did not work out as the Bayern coach had imagined. The Munich team had to overcome a moment of shock early on. After a long ball, VfL striker Moritz Broschinski put the ball past Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer as he rushed out. Only a courageous sprint and good physical effort from central defender Min-jae Kim, who cleared the ball just in front of the goal, prevented the early deficit (8th).
Bochum appeared committed, involved Bayern in many duels and thus posed problems for Munich in the early stages. Nevertheless, the favorite took the lead. Olise curled a free kick over the wall into the right corner. VfL goalkeeper Patrick Drewes could only watch.
Bayern now let the ball run better and controlled the game. They didn’t radiate much brilliance at first, but it was enough. Another free kick made it 2-0 – this time with a variation. Joshua Kimmich lifted the ball from the right corner of the penalty area to the near post, where Musiala, who is not exactly known for his heading skills, headed unchallenged into the goal. Kane (30th) and Musiala (40th) had further shots from promising positions before the break, but their aim was not precise enough.
At the beginning of the second half, Bochum came back briefly. Neuer was there with his fists when Maximilian Wittek took a sharp free kick towards the goal. Otherwise, VfL lacked accuracy in the penalty area and individual class.
Bayern, on the other hand, relentlessly exploited their technical superiority. A Coman goal rightly didn’t count because of an offside position, but when Kane made it 3-0 there was nothing to complain about. The game was decided at the latest after the English super striker’s goal.
Now everything worked. Substitute Sané scored Munich’s fourth goal with a remarkable curling shot, and Coman’s fifth goal – also from a distance – was even better.
