FC Bayern is back at the top of the table in the women’s Bundesliga. With a narrow win in the top game against Leverkusen, they took advantage of the competition’s mistake.
The FC Bayern Munich footballers have made it back to the top of the table. The Munich women gave coach Alexander Straus a late 3:2 (0:1) away win at Bayer Leverkusen on his 49th birthday. The German champions (18 points) moved past the previous leaders Eintracht Frankfurt (16). Eintracht surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Cornelia Kramer (20th) scored a surprising 1-0 win for the hosts as the game progressed. In the second half, Sarah Zadrazil (50th) equalized for FCB, before Julia Mickenhagen put Leverkusen in the lead again a minute later in her second Bundesliga game. Georgia Stanway (66th) equalized with a penalty. The 17-year-old Alara Sehitler (90th) scored in the majority to win. In addition, Leverkusen’s Mickenhagen was sent off with a yellow-red card twenty minutes before the end of the game (73rd, repeated foul play).
The FC Bayern women showed a strong reaction to their first defeat in 44 games against VfL Wolfsburg the previous week. First they won the Champions League 2-0 at Juventus Turin, now they managed the late lucky punch against a direct competitor for the lead in the table.
On the next match day in two weeks there will be another top game for the FCB women when they host Eintracht Frankfurt on Monday (6 p.m./DAZN, MagentaSport).
