Mumbai: A mysterious letter reportedly circulated on WhatsApp has reached some police stations in Maharashtra, leveling horrific allegations of rape against eight female police constables posted in the Mumbai jurisdiction. Free Press Journal obtained a copy of the letter, in which eight constables have reportedly accused three senior police officers of the Motor Transport Unit (MTU) of sexual exploitation and abuse.

The letter, addressed to top officials including the state Chief Minister, Mumbai Police Commissioner, Additional Police Commissioners and Deputy Police Commissioners, was also sent to local police stations, including Matunga. It claims senior officers impregnated eight constables, threatened them and blackmailed them using explicit photos and videos.

The constables denied the allegations

However, after verification, the Free Press Journal found that the allegations made in the letter were false. The constables mentioned in the letter denied the allegations, insisting that their superiors treated them with respect. Some constables, upset by the false allegations, attempted suicide as the letters reached their families and friends through WhatsApp.

“This is very shameful and humiliating,” said one of the WPCs, whose name was mentioned in the first line of the letter. He said, “Everything is fake, not a single thing is real.” Our superiors treat us with utmost respect and honor as WPCs and sisters. Saying such things about him is prima facie wrong and defamatory. Secondly, it is also humiliating for us (WPC), because now copies of the letters are reaching our family and friends through WhatsApp.

Expressing similar sentiments, another victim said, “Some of us tried to commit suicide as their families started questioning them about the contents found in the letter. Some were married, some were engaged, some had become mothers and you know how the society looks at a woman when such news comes out?”

clarification from superiors

Speaking to FPJ, one of the senior officers posted at the MTU Nagpada unit (whose name is mentioned as that of a stalker) said, “My wife is getting the letter on her WhatsApp. My family is asking me questions but I am calm because I know that I have not done anything like what is written in the letter. When we do good work there are always people who are hurt by it and that is the situation.

The Mumbai Police officer said, “At first it seemed horrifying but as I read and looked at the signature, I realized it was fake. The signatures look as if they were signed by one person and not eight people. Whatever is mentioned in it needs to be verified and the correspondent should be interrogated to know his motive, followed by strict disciplinary action.

Eight WPCs will soon visit the office of Mumbai CP and will also meet the administration department. They are planning to initiate serious action against the sender of the letter.
