“One life. One car. One chance.” – this is how the auction house RM Sotheby’s is promoting what is probably the biggest hit of this year’s automobile sales, which is coming up in November. The bar for 2023 is actually quite high, as Ferraris that were almost ready for scrap were just sold for several million euros (you can find out more here).

The most beautiful Ferrari in the company’s history to date

But the planned auction is tough. For sale is a Ferrari 330 LM / 250 GTO from 1962, of which there are two or three examples depending on your point of view. This is extremely rare for a sports car whose “basic version” was built less than 40 times anyway.

In addition, the 250 GTO is still considered the most beautiful Ferrari to this day and other vehicles in this model family have already achieved record prices. For example, there is a ’62 250 GTO that changed hands in 2018 for over $48 million (learn more here).

RM Sotheby’s expects this car to fetch at least $60 million. That’s because of its history. It is the only factory-owned Series I GTO driven by Scuderia Ferrari. He drove at Le Mans and on the Nürburgring, and was later used in hill climbs.

In 1985, after the car had been in the USA for almost 20 years, it was meticulously restored. To this day, all documents, correspondence, racing reports from the time and magazine articles that talk about the Ferrari with chassis number 3765 have been preserved.

Original condition since the eighties

The original 4-liter engine is also installed again. The car temporarily lost that and was given the smaller 3-liter version in order to be able to take part in certain racing classes. However, the current owner managed to restore the vehicle to its original condition. Today he wears the number 7 again, which he wore back then at Le Mans – and where the suffix “LM” originally came from.

Whether the most beautiful of the most beautiful has what it takes to become the most expensive classic car in the world will be seen on November 13th, when the car goes on sale in New York.
